Jonathan Swift's classic satirical narrative was first published in 1726, seven years after Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (one of its few rivals in fame and breadth of appeal). As a parody travel-memoir it reports on extraordinary lands and societies, whose names have entered the English language: notably the minute inhabitants of Lilliput, the giants of Brobdingnag, and the Yahoos in Houyhnhnmland, where talking horses are the dominant species. It spares no vested interest from its irreverent wit, and its attack on political and financial corruption, as well as abuses in science, continue to resonate in our own times.

'Thus, gentle Reader, I have given thee a faithful History of my Travels for Sixteen Years, and above Seven Months; wherein I have not been so studious of Ornament as of Truth.' In these words Gulliver represents himself as a reliable reporter of the fantastic adventures he has just set down; but how far can we rely on a narrator whose identity is elusive and whoses inventiveness is self-evident? Gulliver's Travels purports to be a travel book, and describes Gulliver's encounters with the inhabitants of four extraordinary places: Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the country of the Houyhnhnms. A consummately skilful blend of fantasy and realism makes Gulliver's Travels by turns hilarious, frightening, and profound. Swift plays tricks on us, and delivers one of the world's most disturbing satires of the human condition. This new edition includes the changing frontispiece portraits of Gulliver that appeared in successive early editions.

Jonathan Swift's masterpiece is the finest satire in the English language. Lemuel Gulliver's adventures with the tiny inhabitants of Lilliput and the giants of Brobdingnag are familiar from modern abridged adaptations, but the scientists and philosophers of Laputa, the intelligent, horselike Houyhnhnms and the bestial Yahoos provide further opportunities for Swift to satirise society in a manner just as relevant today as it was in the eighteenth century.

Through the eyes of Lemuel Gulliver, Swift's unforgettable satire takes readers into worlds formerly unimagined. Visit four strange and remarkable lands: Lilliput, where Gulliver seems a giant among a race of tiny people; Brobdingnag, the opposite, where the natives are giants and Gulliver puny; the ruined yet magical country of Laputa; and the home of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses far superior to the ugly humanoid Yahoos who share their universe. Abridged for easier reading, with Classic Starts[trademark], young readers can experience the wonder of timeless stories from an early age.

At once satiric and magical, rich in philosophy and astonishing adventure, Gulliver's Travels transports children into worlds unknown. The entire voyage is seen through the eyes of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon whose amazing account begins with a shipwreck on the high seas and continues as he encounters a race of miniature people known as Lilliputians; giant Brobdingnagians; the foolish Laputians; the very humanoid Yahoos; and finally, the gentle and wise horse-like Houhynhyms — beings far superior to Man. Will Gulliver ever make it home again?

The first adventure of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels — the voyage to Lilliput — is illustrated by Children's Laureate Chris Riddell in brilliant, panoramic detail. His pictures complement Martin Jenkins' skilful retelling which is witty and accessible while remaining faithful to the darkly comic tone of Swift, arguably the foremost prose satirist in the English language. Voyage to Lilliput is taken from Jenkins and Riddell's original hardback, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver, winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal.

«The originality, concentrated power and «fierce indignation» of his satirical writing have earned Jonathan Swift a reputation as the greatest prose satirist in English literature. «Gulliver's Travels» is, of course, his world-renowned masterpiece in the genre; however, Swift wrote other, shorter works that also offer excellent evidence of his inspired lampoonery. Perhaps the most famous of these is «A Modest Proposal», in which he straight-facedly suggests that Ireland could solve its hunger problems by using its children for food. Also included in this collection are «The Battle of the Books», «A Meditation upon a Broomstick», «A Discourse Concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit» and «Аn Argument Against Abolishing Christianity in England». This inexpensive edition will certainly be welcomed by teachers and students of English literature, but its appeal extends to any reader who delights in watching a master satirist wield words as weapons.»
